The anniversary of Michael Columbini’s death takes place during MR Safety week. In July 2001 the 6 year old was killed when a magnetic oxygen cylinder was accidentally taken into the MRI scan room.

MR Safety week is an international annual event that takes place on this anniversary with the aim of promoting the importance of MR safety and best practice within MRI services.

This week gives us an opportunity to review our knowledge and working practices and above all remind everyone who works with us of the safety implications of working around magnetic fields. It is an opportunity to share learning, reflect, and identify any areas where we could improve our MR safety to avoid potential for unsafe practices which could lead to incidents that are preventable.
